Martinsville
is an independent city located within the confines of Henry
County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a
total population of 15,416. It is the county seat of Henry
County. Martinsville is home to the paper clip-shaped Martinsville
Speedway, the shortest track in NASCAR stock car racing
(0.526 mi) and also one of the first paved "superspeedways",
being built in 1947.

County, Virginia. It was originally named Patrick Henry
County, for Patrick Henry, who was then serving as the first
Governor of Virginia after independence.

the population is 47,286. Its county seat is Rocky Mount.The
county was formed in 1785 from parts of Bedford County and
Henry County. It was named for Benjamin Franklin. This county
was home to Booker T. Washington, a slave who became one
of the main civil rights activitist of his era. During Prohibition,
local wits named Franklin County the "Moonshine Capital
of the World," a name trumpeted today by the local
chamber of commerce.
